In honor of Día de los Muertos, I am excited to introduce Cempasúchil.

Cempasúchil (cempohualxochitl in Náhuatl) is the Mexican word for what is known in English as Marigold. It is pronounced like Sem-pah-sue-chill or sehm-pah-so-sheel. It means twenty petal flower.

You might have some growing on your patio right now, or maybe some waiting in the garden to decorate your ofrenda (family altar).

Marigolds are native to Mexico and were a sacred flower in the Aztec culture, associated with The Lady of the Dead, the goddess Mictecacihuatl. She would open the gates between our worlds and the bold scent of the Cempasúchil leaves would lead the souls of the dead back home to their families.

Best in two coats, 3-4 coats for closer to full opacity.
